How I Use Ayurveda in My Day-to-Day Life

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of healing, is all about balance — balancing your mind, body, and spirit to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

As a result of my upbringing – as will be the case with so many others – I’ve incorporated Ayurveda into my life without even realising. I don’t treat it as ‘medicine’ or ‘remedies’, but small things that help me take care of myself and feel more connected, energized, and healthy.

Incorporating Ayurveda into your life doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about little habits that work with your body’s natural rhythms and needs. From boosting your immune system to reducing stress, Ayurveda can benefit your overall wellbeing in countless ways.

These are some examples of how I use Ayurveda in my life, though it can be different for everyone!

Turmeric Milk When I’m Feeling Ill: Since I was a kid, whenever I feel run down or a cold coming on, I’ve been given turmeric milk (also known as "golden milk"). It’s a simple mix of warm milk, turmeric, and a little honey. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, so it helps soothe my body and boosts my immune system. It makes me feel so much better drinking it in the evening just before bed (but top tip – wash any residue off light colour nails!

Ashwagandha Every Morning: I take it every morning, usually in powder form mixed into my smoothie. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that helps the body cope with stress and it keeps me calm and centered throughout the day, especially when things get busy. It’s so easy to get everywhere now, so if you're looking for a natural way to manage stress, this is a great place to start.

Mint Tea After Meals: I love a cup of mint tea after meals to help digestion – and have got a fresh mint plant to mix it in with hot water, especially in the evening. In Ayurveda, digestion is key to overall health, and mint helps soothe the stomach and encourages better digestion. It’s a simple, refreshing way to wind down after eating, and it always leaves me feeling lighter – sometimes I add Fennel for an even better digestive boost.

Ayurvedic Skincare: Neem for Sensitive Skin: Ayurvedic skincare is becoming so popular, for its natural and chemical free options. Neem has been a lifesaver for my sensitive skin - I use it in face wash and moisturiser products to calm inflammation and reduce redness. It's natural, gentle, and effective — everything I want in skincare.

Ginger Tea Whenever I Feel a Cold Coming On: Ginger – whether you love it or hate it – has an incredible host of immune-boosting properties, and is widely used in Asian cooking. As soon as I feel the first signs of a cold, I brew a strong cup of warming ginger tea, sometimes mixed with Lemon. I sip it throughout the day to ward off illness and always feel a difference after a few cups!

Daily Breathwork and Meditation: Ayurveda teaches that mental health is just as important as physical health. Every day, I spend a few minutes focusing on my breath and meditating, especially in the evening. This practice helps me calm my mind and center myself, which is crucial for maintaining balance in the chaos of everyday life.

Incorporating Ayurveda into your routine doesn't have to be overwhelming. It’s about adding small, meaningful habits that support your health and wellbeing and work for you.

For me, it’s been a gentle, natural way to stay balanced in a fast-paced world. Whether it’s through food, drink, skincare, or mindfulness, Ayurveda has become a valuable tool in my daily self-care.
